Whether you like them freshly picked off the tree or baked into a classic pie, apples are always a delicious, healthy treat that remind us of brisk, sweet autumn days. With Halloween fast approaching, many sweets shops in the area have integrated this seasonal favorite into their menus in the form of candy apples, cider doughnuts, or gourmet chocolates. Here are just a few of our favorite local shops that offer some of the best treats that are sure to please your sweet tooth.
Candy Apple Shoppe, Warwick
“Where life just gets sweeter” is the fitting motto for this unique sweets shop. With more than 40 varieties of candied gourmet apples drizzled in caramel, chocolate, or engulfed in a sweet candy shell, these hand-dipped confectionery creations are irresistible to any apple lover.
The Orchards of Concklin, Pomona
Family-owned since 1711, this farm, orchard, and shop has been a Rockland County favorite for generations. Featuring a sprawling 400 acres of land where you can pick your own apples during the season, and a modest farm stand with fresh produce, the Orchards also offer a wide selection of baked goods, including apple cider doughnuts, cookies, and cakes.
Krause’s Chocolates, Saugerties
Krause’s has been a reader favorite for years for its wide range of unique, hand-made chocolate treats, including seasonal items like caramel apples, pumpkin seed brittle, and molded chocolates in the shapes of fall (and Halloween) critters like squirrels, bats, and Jack-o’-lanterns.
Samuel’s Sweet Shop, Rhinebeck
Located in the heart of town, this gourmet candy shop offers everything from truffles and dark chocolate espresso to gummy worms and pop rocks. They even offer free ground shipping on their products to anywhere in the United States.
Alps Sweet Shop, Beacon and Fishkill
This shop has been selling sweets in Beacon since 1922. Not only does it have your basic chocolate needs, but it puts a fun twist on classics. For example, it takes potato chips and dips them in chocolate for a sweet and salty treat. Need to get in the Halloween spirit? Try one of the molded chocolate pumpkins.
Vasilow's Confectionery Inc., Hudson
From holiday specials to old-fashion favorites to classic chocolates, this confectionery has it all. Try the house specials like chocolate covered popcorn and Twizzlers. If that's not your speed, try one of the many flavors of truffles that are so decadent you'll be begging for just one more.
