India is one of the world’s largest and most diverse countries, and as such hosts a complex and wide-reaching food culture. The nation’s dozens of ethnic, religious, and cultural groups have all made their mark on the cuisine, resulting in a wealth of vegetarian options, halal dishes, inventive curries, and more.

Fortunately, those flavors have made their way to the Hudson Valley, popping up in restaurants from Albany to Brewster. So, the next time you're craving spicy curry or tempting tikka masala, you can find it all at the Valley's Indian eateries.

Bliss Kitchen

Housed in the Bliss Wellness Center, this café is contemporary, all-vegetarian Indian restaurant operated according to Ayuverdic standards and with plentiful vegan options. It offers a daily lunch buffet for those who want to fill up on a budget.

Bluestone Tavern & Tandoori Grill

Bluestone in Saugerties isn't just an Indian restaurant, but it's Indian entrees are easily the most tempting things on the menu. Find the perfect balancy of creamy and spicy with the lamb shank curry, which features roasted lamb with yogurt in a pepper and onion sauce. The vegetarian-approved palak paneer with purred spinach in red curry is lighter and just as scrumptious.

Cinnamon began on the side of Route 9, and was long a takeout favorite before moving to its current digs right in the center of Rhinebeck. Founders Chaminda and Shiwanti hail from Sri Lanka and offer a slightly more upscale take on modern Indian cuisine, as well as a number of craft beers.

New Windsor

Between its daily lunch buffets, clay oven specialties, and sizable vegetarian menu, Citrus is beloved by New Windsor locals, who rely upon it as a budget-friendly staple. Citrus also serves Thai cuisine.

I woke up this morning with a craving for butter chicken, and was able to pick up some great takeout for an early dinner tonight. Had to grab some vindaloo, garlic naan and rasmalai too. Obviously. A miniature feast. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜โ˜บ๏ธ It’s almost #friyay friends!! Jaipore Royal Indian Cuisine

In addition to its extensive, traditional menu, Jaipore is distinguished by its location: a 19th century mansion that previously served as, among other things, the home of abolitionist Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher, a speakeasy, and Charlie Chaplin Studios.

Jaipore offers a number of affordable lunch deals, as well as a daily buffet.

Karavalli bills itself as “a gourmet trail of the many diverse regions of India,” highlighting street food, Indo-Chinese cuisine, and specialties from the Karavalli region in Southwest India. Come here for the dishes you just can’t find anywhere else.

Masala Kraft Café

This all-vegetarian spot is focused on street food and is refreshingly casual, with counter service and a BYOB policy. Owner Jasumati Vaghji also offers her own updated take on a number of dishes, including creative paninis, pitas, and okra rolls.

This family-owned place is a recent addition to the Hudson Valley food scene, with a focus on staples and takeout. Locals love Namaste for the Malai Kofte and Palak Paneer, along with a healthy number of clay oven chicken dishes. Delivery is available on many popular apps, and is free within three miles.

Nirvana’s full service bar and generous buffet are a dream for upper Hudson Valley diners, who love its expansive menu for the diverse extent of Indian cuisine that focuses on North Indian dairy dishes and coconut-heavy food from the south.

I love this place.

Red Hook Curry House

Red Hook

Housed in a simple, one-story building on Red Hook’s main street, the Curry House’s fluorescent-dining area appears to be nothing special. For those in the know, that's all the better to keep the trendy away from Mohammed and Maksuda’s outrageously delicious takes on traditional Indian staples.

Tuesdays and Sundays are buffet nights, with plentiful vegetarian dishes as well as endless naan and tea. As if that wasn't sweet enough, Red Hook Curry House is also BYOB.

Since opening in 2007, Saffron has treated Middletown eaters to fine cuisine that spotlights the flavors of both northern and southern India. A delight for the senses, the menu is wonderfully authentic, with flavorful dishes like kashmiri lamb chops, paneer tikka masala, and aloo gobi masala front and center. Vegetarian options abound, and mild chicken or lamb and rice specials are available for children as well.

Spicy Mint

Spicy Mint sets itself apart both as a purveyor of South Indian specialties like Uthappam and Dosa, as well as its Halal-certified meat. The prices are a real draw here, since almost everything is under fifteen dollars. As for the flavors, let's just say they aren't kidding about the spice.

When it comes to authentic Indian food in the Hudson Valley, Fishkill's Tanjore is a hidden gem. The eatery satisfies every craving with dishes like lasoni gobi, batter-fried cauliflower sauteed in a tomato and garlic sauce, and spicy chicken vindaloo cooked in a hot and tangy Goan sauce. As far as naan options go, get the cheese version, which comes stuffed with cheddar cheese and cilantro, or the onion kulcha layered with onions and green bell peppers. P.S. You may want to place a second order; the naan is just that good.

Though its menu is considerably smaller than most Indian places, Tulsi’s chefs have tried to sample the best from all over India, from Kashmiri Chicken and Balti Baingan to a special South Indian Fish Moilee and very spicy Indo-Chinese food.
