In June, Students Need All the Answers
Educators around the Valley take a turn at answering questions about learning.
What makes Berkshire Country Day School intentional, independent, and inspired?
This Preschool-Grade 9 school brings intentionality and creativity to the typical components of an independent school education in order to inspire every single member of our community to engage in teaching, learning, and personal growth. Our students are extraordinarily self-aware and confident at every grade level — ready and eager to be, as our mission states, “exemplary citizens of the world.” We are excited to introduce bus service from the Hudson area in 2017!

What is active curriculum?
Through active curriculum and project-based learning, Darrow School is transforming the ways in which students learn. Whether deconstructing a Happy Meal to learn about the environmental impact of mass-produced food; publishing their own book on sexual education for teens; or exploring sustainable ecosystems through designing, constructing, and marketing composting worm bins, Darrow students take agency in their own education. In this community-focused, hands-on, and design-oriented work, failure is not only expected, but is seen as a valuable learning experience. www.darrowschool.org.

What’s new at Dutchess Day School?
Our head of school! Dutchess Day School is excited to welcome Matthew Heard in July as the school’s 11th head. Prior to serving as head of upper school at the Fay School in Southborough, Massachusetts, Heard was the assistant head of school at The Tuxedo Park School. His teaching experience is largely in science and, prior to that, outdoor education and leadership and certification as a wilderness first responder. His over 20 years of experience in all aspects of education and educational leadership have prepared him to take over from the school’s well-loved, retiring head of school, Nancy Hathaway.

Why did Immaculate Heart Academy decide to implement a department solely dedicated to College Counseling?
At Immaculate Heart Academy, we find that a major key to our success is to remain on the cutting edge of educational programming. We introduced a College Counseling Department in the 2016-17 academic year after recognizing that it was both a need and want of our faculty, students, and teachers. This new department allows us to have a more focused, individualized plan for each of our students to ensure they are attending the colleges that will allow them to reach their goals. Our College Counseling Department also works diligently to educate parents about the ever-changing landscape of college admissions. The department's creation was truly a collaborative effort, and we are proud that it proved to be successful in its first year.

How does your school foster a global worldview in students?
One exciting way Maplebrook cultivates a global worldview among students is through our connections with Daegu University in South Korea. Using Zoom, students in Maplebrook’s post-secondary program have class with peers in Daegu’s K-PACE program. This class teaches cross-cultural communication and social skills, and allows MBS students to interact with another culture. Additionally, two special education teachers from Daegu intern at Maplebrook School every year, and assist with this class and other student learning opportunities.

What is your institution’s goal for its students besides providing an academic education?
Our students and faculty believe that the classroom is a space of shared exploration where all voices are heard, students are given the freedom to take academic risks, and develop their own views, but also learn to communicate and live effectively in a community. Our goals are met when students possess the confidence to successfully navigate new and complex topics and the willingness to embrace the diversity of ideas and opinions they encounter.
